Focusing on the now

So big news (that may already be a bit old for some of you) for RadioactiveRunner! Yesterday SkinnyRunner featured me in one of her Cat Lady Blogs (No, I’m definitely not a Cat Lady). I was so happy and it was so awesome to hear from so many of you!!! THANK YOU for all of your kind comments and I can’t wait to learn more about YOU and your story!!!

I spent the last two nights at my parents place.. we had a quick but nice visit. I had my yearly check up yesterday with my Nuclear Medicine Doctor. It’s crazy to think it’s been three years since I was diagnosed. All is well, and nothing new to report at this time.

It’s crazy to think about the number of people with Cancer. It actually makes me really sad. Maybe I feel more aware about it since being diagnosed myself but I feel like it’s everywhere; the young, the middle-aged, the old. Thyroid Cancer is now the fourth most common cancer among females in Ontario. Who would have thought? On my parents street alone, there were three women that were diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer (myself being one of them). I find it hard to believe that the Big C is unheard of in some nations. For example, GMan is from Mexico and he says that while he lived there he didn’t hear anything about people having cancer or fundraising for cancer organizations whereas here, I feel like it’s second nature. Why is that?  Not to be all Señorita Negativity but I don’t think they will ever find a cure for cancer. It’s such a huge business and thousands and thousands of people would be out of a job. Although, I do hope someone proves me wrong.

OK, enough serious talk…

Did you watch American Idol last night? I LOVE that show and look forward to watching it. Last night was so INTENSE!  Between all of the contestants boo-hooing and then J-LO having a cry herself, I was on the edge of my seat. How can Jennifer still look so stunningly beautiful while crying? I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty ugly when I cry and my face gets all red and blotchy. I hate how they dragged the walk to the judges on and on and on… Ok, we get it just tell us who made it!!  Do you watch American Idol?  What’s your favorite reality show?

My favorite contestant so far is fifteen year old Lauren Alaina. She has a powerhouse voice and raw talent.

This week is a down week in my training plan. Remember what I thought of my last down week? Well this one is different. After my hard run last Saturday I’ve been embracing this time to really focus on actual recovery. Allowing my body to rest and relax, my spirit to re-focus and trying to really focus on the ‘now’. I feel great and each time I think about my upcoming race I get more excited!!

Tuesday night I took advantage and ran on the treadmill for 40 minutes … it felt good to get the legs moving.

watching The Biggest Loser and running without falling off the treadmill = talent.

Last night I went to a Zumba class at Good Life with my Madre and sister. I LOVE ZUMBA!!

Zumba is “an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party”. If the instructor is good it’s awesome, a good workout AND fun! Really though, it feels like an hour of booty shaking- salsa-ing-dancing. Have you ever tried it? If you haven’t, grab a friend and go and let me know what you think!

awkwardly modeling new workout shirt from Costco. Thanks Mama!

My cute Mom and I before Zumba - take 1

take 2. (Roots grey zip-up is also new from Costco.. it's soo comfy)

I have been wanting to try yoga for awhile now and my awesome Mama bought me Jillian Michaels “Yoga Meltdown” DVD (Thanks Mama!).  I’m looking forward to trying yoga for my first time ever. I thought it would be good for stretching and relaxing on my easy run days.

Now that I think of it, Jillian is an in-your-face -kick-your-ass kind of girl so I don’t know how relaxing it will be. Uh-Oh. I’ll let you know after I try it.

Do you ever do workout videos at home?
~I have tried maybe one but normally, I don’t. Maybe I’ll change my mind after trying Yoga Meltdown.

Are you going to watch American Idol tonight?
~ YES! Of course :)

I use 30 Day Shred when I can’t get to the gym. It’s a nice full body workout.
And no, I don’t have cable.

  2. Sarah says:

I found your blog from Skinny Runner yesterday and I really like it! I like how honest you are about what you’ve been through. And of course…you like to run (like me!). Anyway, I have Yoga Meltdown and I LOVE IT. I think you will, too. Jillian works you really hard, but you don’t know you’re working that hard during the workout. After though: you feel like rockstar! I hope you like it. I love American Idol. Steven Tyler is my favorite. Haven’t watched last night’s yet…I work evenings and don’t get home until midnight. Maybe tomorrow on DVR!!!!

    • Radioactive Runner says:

Ohh, now I’m looking forward to trying it even more! Thanks for the comment!!
I think Steven Tyler has added a lot to this season of AI.. he’s great.

  3. lindsay says:

oh zumba! thats a fun class. Was it your mom’s first time too?

    • Radioactive Runner says:

It wasn’t my Mom’s first, no.. she actually goes every wk (sometimes twice a wk) with a couple of friends. She’s awesome :)

  4. Darlene says:

I noticed you forgot to tell everyone your madre kicked your ass at Zumba! It was good to have you home.

  5. Darlene says:

American Idol and Biggest Loser are my favorite shows. I am glad you like to watch them.

    • Radioactive Runner says:

HAHAH I laughed outloud at your first comment.. you are so funny.. but it’s true. You are a better zumba-er than me :)

  6. Amanda says:

I really like the Bachelor & American Idol when it comes to reality shows! But my all time favorite tv shows are The Office & Parks and Recreation! They are SOO funny :)

  7. Jena says:

Hi! I saw your blog on SR the other day and I wanted to stop by, and leave a comment!

I have Yoga Meltdown & I love it. Prior to that I’d never done yoga because I’m not into the whole slow “ohhmmmm” kind of thing. Jillian doesn’t move to fast, but it’s a good workout. I’m definitely sweating at the end. She combines yoga poses with repetitions and gets your heart flowing. ( I feel like i’m trying to sell you the DVD) :-) In all seriousness I really do enjoy the DVD and it definitely leaves me feeling stretched. Good Luck with it!

I also LOVE Biggest Loser! I’ve never been able to get into American Idol. I get all embarrassed for the contestants. I can’t watch people make such big fools of themselves.

  8. Rae says:

I am a huge Jillian fan. I have all her videos and do them all the time…except the yoga one. I’m not a yoga fan for some reason. But I did give her yoga video a try when it was free on-demand. It was tough! She doesn’t mess around. You are right, I don’t think it’s a relaxing yoga video, it’s a hard core yoga video. Good luck with it!

  9. Nicole says:

Please give a review of Yoga Meltdown! I’ve been wanting to get it for my rest days.

  10. OH MY GOSH Sabrina! I had NO idea that you had been through all that. You are absolutely incredible. Thyroid cancer really can be so scary!! :( I have a friend who is being tested for it as we speak and it scares me to death. Thanks for showing such a positive example of what it’s like to be a fighter. You are awesome!
I’m glad you liked the double dream hands…it is SO ridiculous, and funny…Have an AWESOME weekend darling! xoxoxo

  11. Gretchen says:

Yoga Meltdown is intense…and not much like a yoga class at a studio (in my experience)…it’s still great and definately a good workout. Just found your blog from Skinny Runner…already hooked!

  12. Mari-Ann says:

Oh, radioactiverunner, I was introduced to Yoga in a class (in spanish) in Costa Rica and I was hooked! You should try it in a class some day too, if you can. As a runner and a fast-paced mover, it truly is a great time to just let your body get to slow down and get to know itself, and at the same time get an amazing stretch. It’s tough but if you get a good teacher than you’re set. Hot Yoga is cool too, trying the conventional Yoga first would be a good start. I havne’t tried the DVD but it sounds like a great workout!

    • Radioactive Runner says:

Yoga in CR? let’s do it! Ohhh, that would be so cool!! That’s awesome that you were introduced to yoga in CR… everytime you do it, you can relax and pretend your back in the rain forest. I definitely want to try hot yoga, i’ve heard good things about it… hopefully soon!
