‘Tis the Season

As I sat down to write this,  I was getting all excited thinking there is only one more day to go until the weekend. Man, how WRONG am I? Ok, so it’s only Wednesday.. I get it.

Who watched The Biggest Loser last night? I know I’ve said it before but I just LOVE that show. Oh me oh my, I think Dolvett is such an AWESOME trainer. Who wouldn’t want to train one on one with him? He would seriously kick some butt and he seems to bring out the beast in all of the contestants he’s trained. Who wants to go to his studio in Atlanta to take some of his classes? I know this girl would. I’m in.. better yet, Dolvett, come to Canada to teach some classes please!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez left a 200% tip at IHop the other day. What a nice surprise that would have been for the server. Umm hello, please come and sit in my little restaurant and I promise to give you the best service ever.

We are soon approaching the Christmas season that’s filled with parties, meetings and family gatherings which can make it more difficult to stay on track with our workouts and eating healthy. A lot of people wait until January to make a New Years resolution to get back on track, or hit the gym … but why wait? Why not start now and go into the New Year feeling refreshed and ready to take on what 2012 has in store for us. Are you with me? That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a nice family dinner, a few treats, or a glass of wine. The key is to finding that balance to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Here are a few points that we can use as reminders during this holiday season to keep us on track and balanced:

~ Make family time active time: Why not head out the door for a nice walk after a big meal for some quality family time rather than hit the couch and complain about how full we are. Come on, we’ve all done it! Whether it’s a ten minute walk or an hour walk, I guarantee you will return feeling refreshed and feeling good for being active and thankful for quality time well spent. Or why not take the kids, friends or hubby out to play in the snow, make some snow angels or even a snow ball fight? This active family time should be enjoyable and not stressful. None of us need any extra stress over the holidays. IMG_0977 (768x1024)

~ Treat yourself: In order to stay on track that doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself, that you can’t enjoy a treat from the dessert table at the work party or that special dessert your friend made for the annual cocktail party. If you have a craving, allow yourself to enjoy that treat and move on. I find that if I have a craving (let’s say chocolate because really, when am I not craving it), it’s better to just eat a little bit of it (remember, in moderation!) rather than deprive myself and worrying about it because if I do that then I tend to eat everything else in sight to try and fulfill my craving. Trust me, it never works. CupCake7 (1024x678)~ Drink responsibly: Alcohol is full of empty calories but again, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a glass of wine over dinner. Try and go with the smarter option. The average five-ounce glass of red wine contains just under 100 calories. Blended drinks such as a piña colada can clock in at a whopping 450 calories – the equivalent of a double cheeseburger from McDonalds. source: Canadian Living magazine. Yikes!! IMG_2224 (640x480)

~ Don’t make excuses!! – I hear so often "I just don’t have time to go to the gym". Ok, I understand that. Although everyone has an extra 15 minutes in their day to move their body! If you know you’re going to have an extra busy day ahead of you, make time in the morning to workout. Your body will thank you. Not sure where to start? Do some jumping jacks, burpees, or squats in the kitchen. These exercises will get your heart pumping and don’t require a lot of space.

Let’s help each other out to reach our goals and stay balanced rather than waiting until the new year. I know we’ve all heard it before but there is no time better than the present, right?!

Great post, Sabrina! Love your tips, especially getting outside with your family! Even if/when it’s so cold, once you bundle up and head out, even for a walk, you always feel better! And I’m with you – great to have an accountability partner to stay consistent during the winter! With that said, I’m manning up and heading out for a run. ;) Have a great weekend, friend! Oh – and if Dolvett ever gets back to you, let me know – I’ll fly out for the workout. ;D

Great tips! I knew I wasn’t making it to the gym today, so I pushed the coffee table out of the way and got in 20 minutes of core exercises and planks. It’s my mission to at least do something physical each day. Especially during this holiday season!

Nice post!! I love the motivational tips. Its so easy to just sit and watch tv when you get home but maybe changing it up by biking on the trainer and watching tv is a better idea! Even if just for a few minutes.

I feel motivated and on my way already! :)

you are so right, Mari-Ann! Even if it’s just a few minutes, every little bit counts!!
I tried commenting on your blog the other day but for some reason, I am unable to?
